FWIW, I know someone who is a financial analyst. He majored in math in college, minored in economics. He was 2nd in his class at a small but extremely competitive college and one of his profs put him in touch with the firm he works for now. He makes a “ton” of money and loves what he does – mathematical modeling.

These are very difficult times to get new jobs in finance area because so many experienced people are jobless, and there is a lot of supply compared to less demand.

Finance is a vast field. Please identify what topics/areas within finance interest you the most, and try to approach companies as a motivated and competent person, who is willing to work at a low salary. That’s your best chance if you want employment.

If you want to be in investments, then you should try to make 1-2 profitable investments, and show their proof to potential employers. Let the numbers speak.

This is difficult without the break-up of your pay since part of the basic is already accounted for as PF etc and not everything is taxed at the same rate if supportings are available. I suggest that you download this tax calculator from http://prrajan-tax.blogspot.com/2008/03/indian-income-tax-calculator-for-fy2008.html and fill in the columns; change the “M” to “F” in the “Parameters” sheet.
You can try values until you get a zero tax liability. In case you have any queries on its usage, you may ping me through my Y! Answers profile.
