Open Question: New Insurance Cover Hernia?

My doctor told me I need hernia surgery, but I can wait 4-5 months. My question is if I get insurance coverage at a job in the next couple of months would it cover the surgery or would it be considered a pre existing condition? Should I wait to see if I get insurance or just figure on paying the whole cost?
